Crane Calamity: Metro Construction Incident in Mumbai's BKC

A massive crane used in the Mumbai Metro rail construction unexpectedly toppled early Wednesday morning, leading to significant traffic delays in the bustling Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). No injuries were reported, but J Kumar Infraprojects Limited, the project contractor, received a hefty fine of Rs 1 crore.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials noted that the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. near the Asian Heart Hospital junction due to a mechanical malfunction while lifting a pre-cast beam. A 600-ton capacity crane has been deployed to manage the removal of the fallen crane.

A preliminary investigation revealed a gear failure in one crane's lifting boom, causing the load to shift, which resulted in the toppling incident. Traffic in the area remains affected due to the ongoing crane restoration process.
