A devastating storm accompanied by heavy rain struck Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district, impacting over 5,000 residents and damaging approximately 1,000 homes. The storm's wrath was felt most in villages under the Umling and Jirang blocks, according to Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal.
The powerful storm, which hit on Monday night, also led to the loss of livestock and crops, adding to the community's hardship. Fortunately, no fatalities or injuries have been reported thus far. However, the extent of the damage is still being assessed, as reports from certain areas are yet to arrive.
Power outages were another harsh consequence, leaving many without electricity, Baranwal said. In response, the district administration has been proactive in distributing relief materials, including food items, warm clothing, tarpaulins, and other essentials, to support the affected families.
