WMO Launches Survey to Strengthen Climate Impact Services in Europe
By collecting practical examples from across the region, WMO aims to highlight successful approaches that improve preparedness and protect lives, infrastructure, and economies.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Association VI (RA VI) has launched a new survey inviting member states and partners to submit case studies on integrated, impact-based weather, climate, and water services, aiming to strengthen climate resilience and decision-making across Europe.
The initiative is led by the RA VI Working Group for Weather, Climate, Hydrological, Marine and Related Environmental Services and Applications, which supports member countries in improving the delivery and effectiveness of environmental services.
Collecting Real-World Climate Service Examples
The survey seeks case studies demonstrating integrated, impact-based services across multiple sectors and hazards, including:
-
Drought
-
Heatwaves
-
Water scarcity
-
Floods
These services focus on translating weather and climate information into actionable insights that help governments, communities, and industries prepare for and respond to environmental risks.
By collecting practical examples from across the region, WMO aims to highlight successful approaches that improve preparedness and protect lives, infrastructure, and economies.
Supporting Better Decision-Making
According to WMO officials, the initiative is designed to strengthen regional collaboration and ensure that climate information is more effectively used by decision-makers.
Members and partners who share their experiences will help:
-
Strengthen regional best practices in climate services
-
Enhance decision-making tools for end users
-
Promote innovative approaches to integrated environmental services
The initiative also supports the Working Group's broader goal of expanding impact-based forecasting and climate services across the RA VI region.
Case Studies to Feature in Climate Services Dashboard
Submissions collected through the survey will be reviewed and may be included in the WMO Climate Services Case Studies Dashboard, a platform designed to showcase operational examples and best practices from across member countries.
The dashboard aims to facilitate:
-
Knowledge exchange between meteorological services
-
Development of improved climate risk management strategies
-
Greater adoption of integrated climate services across sectors
Call for Member Participation
WMO is encouraging all RA VI Members and partner organizations to participate by submitting case studies through the official survey form.
The organization says the contributions will help strengthen collaboration, improve climate services, and support regional efforts to address growing environmental challenges linked to extreme weather and climate change.
