A seven-story apartment building collapsed in Gebze, northwestern Turkiye, early Wednesday morning, leading to the death of two and the entrapment of a family of five under the rubble.
Authorities successfully rescued Dilara Bilir, aged 18, while her siblings, Hayrunnisa, 14, and Muhammed Emir, 12, were confirmed deceased.
The cause of the collapse remains unclear; however, local officials suspect nearby metro construction may have been a contributing factor. This incident raises concerns about Turkiye's enforcement of modern construction codes in earthquake-prone areas.
