The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a forecast on Tuesday indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of Jharkhand due to a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal.
Named 'Montha', the cyclonic storm intensified into a severe cyclonic storm by 5:30 am on Tuesday, according to the IMD bulletin. The term 'Montha' originates from the Thai language, meaning 'fragrant flower.'
The storm's center was located 190 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 270 km south-southeast of Kakinada, and 340 km south-southeast of Vizag in Andhra Pradesh at 5:30 am. It is projected to move north-northwestwards, crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada with wind speeds of 90-100 kmph and gusts up to 110 kmph. In Jharkhand, warnings have been issued for heavy rain in districts like Simdega, West Singhbhum, and others on Tuesday and throughout the week.
