The Centre has approved new terms for the Sitapur-Hanumana Micro Irrigation Project, marking a significant development in Madhya Pradesh's water management efforts. This major inter-state scheme aims to irrigate over 1.29 lakh hectares of rain-fed land while ensuring environmental safeguards, as the site is within the Son Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary.

During a recent meeting of the environment ministry's Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) on River Valley and Hydroelectric Projects, details emerged on how Madhya Pradesh's Water Resources Department plans to enhance irrigation across Rewa, Mauganj, Sidhi, and Singrauli. A new barrage will capture monsoon flows from the Son river, targeting numerous agricultural improvements.

The project's scale is underscored by a Rs 41,679.3 crore budget and its potential to affect thousands of families. While promising increased crop yields and economic benefits, its location within a protected area necessitates a detailed Environmental Impact Assessment to understand implications on local wildlife.
