Legacy of Leadership: Remembering US Rep David Scott

U.S. Representative David Scott, a Georgia Democrat, who had been in office for his 13th term in Congress, has passed away at the age of 80. Known as a ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee, Scott had made history as the first Black chairman of the committee, despite serving a metropolitan district around Atlanta.

Scott, once a formidable figure in farm aid policy and food aid for consumers, was also a prominent member of the moderate Blue Dog coalition. However, his later years in service were marked by criticism and health concerns. He had faced primary challenges, the latest of which occurred shortly before his passing.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries led the tributes to the congressman, calling him a trailblazer who rose from humble beginnings to leave an indelible mark on Georgia and the nation. Scott's passing creates a slight expansion of the Republican majority in the House during a crucial election year.
