In an unprecedented move, student wings across Karnataka transcended political barriers to advocate for the reinstatement of student union elections in the state's colleges. This was confirmed during a significant meeting with Medical Education Minister Sharana Prakash R Patil and Higher Education Minister M C Sudhakar.
Despite the historical ban on student elections in 1989, largely due to campus violence, the student leaders and ministers concluded that the governing guidelines set out by the J M Lyngdoh Committee report will be adhered to. However, modifications will be made to ensure these rules are aligned with current academic and political climates.
Representatives from varied student organizations expressed a collective desire for structured representation, with reserved seats for women and other criteria. While some groups called for specific eligibility standards, including attendance and conduct requirements, others countered for more inclusive criteria, ensuring broader student participation in the electoral process.
