In a fresh controversy in Parliament, Congress MP K C Venugopal has taken a significant step by submitting a privilege notice against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Venugopal accuses the Prime Minister of breaching parliamentary privilege during a recent national address.
The notice, delivered to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleges that Modi cast unwarranted aspersions on members of the House, following the defeat of a crucial constitutional amendment bill. The bill, which intended to implement a women's quota and increase Lok Sabha seats, failed to pass, leading to Modi's stark criticism of opposition members on national television.
This move underscores the tensions in Parliament, as opposition parties rally against what they perceive as a violation of democratic decorum. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh added that the Prime Minister's speech marked a stain on his record, arguing it deviated from the usual unifying purpose of such addresses.
