New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has retained his position after surviving a leadership vote called due to the party's recent dip in the polls. The internal vote took place at a private center-right National Party meeting, following speculation about Luxon's leadership future.
After emerging from the meeting, Luxon confirmed to reporters that the vote of confidence he requested was successful. Having led the National Party since 2021, Luxon plans to continue leading the right-wing coalition government following the 2023 election.
The confidence vote comes just over six months before New Zealand's next national election in November, as the party attempts to regroup and improve its standings with voters ahead of this critical event.
