In a tumultuous session at the Mumbai civic body, corporators from both ruling and opposition parties clashed over the recent defeat of a Constitutional amendment bill aimed at ensuring women's reservation in legislative bodies.
The heated debate saw BJP and Shiv Sena members don black attire in protest, while Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress members made sartorial statements with saffron and party scarves, respectively. Mayor Ritu Tawde faced criticism for wearing a black saree, citing cultural reasons, amid an atmosphere charged with political tensions.
The exchange during the general body meeting, which was primarily intended to discuss Budget 2026-27, devolved into protests, slogans, and disruptions. Amidst these tensions, the BMC launched live streaming of its proceedings, a significant step towards increasing transparency and engaging the public in civic discussions.
