Debate Heats Up Over Women's Reservation and Delimitation Bills

Congress leader Karti Chidambaram criticized the proposed Delimitation Bill, accusing it of using the Women's Reservation Bill as a facade. While affirming support for women's rights, he took a jibe at the government, comparing their promises to an insurance sales pitch with discrepancies between assurances and fine print.

Congress leader Karti Chidambaram raised concerns regarding the proposed Delimitation Bill, alleging that it falsely uses the Women's Reservation Bill to mask its true intentions. Speaking on Friday, Chidambaram insisted that while the DMK party fully supports the Women's Reservation Bill and has championed women's property rights since 1989, it opposes the government's current maneuvering regarding the Delimitation Bill.

Addressing reporters at the Parliament premises, Chidambaram claimed, "This maneuvering, bringing the delimitation under the facade of women's reservation while pushing through the other bill, is concerning, and we are opposing only that." He went on to criticize the government's approach, likening it to a disingenuous insurance sales pitch with discrepancies between verbal assurances and the bill's "fine print."

The controversy intensified as Union Home Minister Amit Shah participated in the parliamentary debate, denying that the proposed changes would undermine the representation of Southern states. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed to quell opposition apprehensions, emphasizing the proportional increase in the Lok Sabha's strength with a 33% reservation for women. The debate continues as Parliament prepares to vote on key amendments related to the Women's Reservation and Delimitation Bills.
