Political Tensions Rise: Luxon's Leadership Under Scrutiny
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon faces reported internal dissent within his National Party. Despite claims of full support, media suggests a leadership push when parliament reconvenes. Polls reveal struggles for Luxon, with declining personal popularity and potential challenges for his party in the upcoming election on November 7.
New Zealand's political landscape is currently rife with tension as Prime Minister Christopher Luxon assures the nation of his party's unwavering support, quelling rumors of an impending leadership challenge. Luxon's statement came in response to media reports suggesting unrest within his National Party ahead of the parliamentary session next week.
The New Zealand Herald reported intentions among party members to confront Luxon. However, it's unlikely this action will culminate in a formal leadership challenge or confidence vote at this stage. Addressing the press, Luxon expressed confidence in the backing of his caucus.
With the general election set for November 7, recent polls paint a grim picture for the National Party, struggling to surpass 30% in public approval. Luxon’s personal approval ratings have also seen a decline, overshadowed by opposition leader Chris Hipkins, particularly after a March RNZ-Reid Research poll showed a preference swing towards him.
