Hungarian Journalists Demand Media Reform
Over 90 journalists from Hungary's MTI demand impartial news coverage restoration after Peter Magyar's election win. Magyar aims to suspend state media broadcasts to ensure unbiased coverage after his centre-right TISZA party's victory. Critics claim state media acts as a government mouthpiece under Viktor Orban.
In a bold move, over 90 journalists from Hungary's state news agency, MTI, have called for the immediate restoration of unbiased news coverage. This comes on the heels of Peter Magyar's electoral success and his commitment to overhaul state media.
Magyar, whose centre-right TISZA party won a sweeping victory, announced plans to suspend broadcasts from public state media until impartiality is guaranteed. This decision forms part of broader initiatives to revive press freedoms amidst accusations that state media has operated as a government tool under Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
MTI journalists, in a letter addressed to Duna Médiaszolgáltató Zrt's CEO Anita Altorjai and MTVA's CEO Daniel Papp, stress the need for editorial independence. They seek a restoration of their agency's autonomy to cover events based on professional standards, bypassing governmental influence.
