The update in Australia's defence strategy focuses on self-reliance. It aims to raise the defence budget from 2.8 per cent of GDP this year to 3 per cent by 2033. Marles insisted that the decision was independent of external pressures from the US government.
A substantial part of Australia's investment will be allocated to acquiring a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines through the AUKUS partnership, involving the US and Britain. This marks Australia's most significant peacetime defence expansion.
