Billions Pledged at Berlin Conference to Aid Sudan Amid Crisis

In a bid to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan, an international conference in Berlin has concluded with financial commitments surpassing €1.3 billion. Declared by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, these funds aim to alleviate the severe ongoing crisis born from the war between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

The conference's significance stems from a need to redirect global focus back to Sudan, as international attention had been drawn towards Ukraine and Iran. Despite the absence of representatives from both warring parties, the event signaled hope for eventual peace, even as the war enters its third tragic year.

Officials from over 60 countries and numerous NGOs attended, though the absence of a ceasefire agreement loomed large. With German pledges totalling €232 million, the gathering underscored not only moral obligations but also strategic interests, such as averting a potential migration crisis similar to the one Europe faced in 2015-2016.
