Goa CM Champions Women's Quota in Legislatures

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has advocated for a women's quota in legislative assemblies, expressing willingness to sacrifice his own seat if necessary. Addressing a women's town hall, Sawant highlighted Goa's readiness to implement the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam', aiming for 33% women's reservation in legislative bodies.

The upcoming special parliamentary session will address amendments to operationalize the act by 2029, potentially expanding legislative assemblies, including Goa's. This reform aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of increased female representation from local councils to national levels.

Sawant criticized past governments for not prioritizing women's representation, unlike Goa's pioneering gender-specific budget. With an increase in Lok Sabha seats to accommodate the quota, women are anticipated to significantly participate in decision-making processes, reflecting a shift towards gender equality in politics.
