Hungary's Kingmaker: The Rise of Our Homeland
Hungary's far-right Our Homeland party may become a key player in the upcoming elections. It is potentially the only small party expected to secure enough votes to enter parliament, joining the main parties. This could significantly influence the power dynamics, especially against Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Fidesz party.
In the upcoming Hungarian elections, the far-right Our Homeland party is poised to become a crucial political influencer. Recent opinion polls suggest that it might be the only small party capable of surpassing the 5% vote threshold needed to gain parliamentary seats, potentially becoming a kingmaker.
Nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has been in power for 16 years, faces a formidable challenge from the centre-right Tisza party. However, Our Homeland, led by Laszlo Toroczkai, could also significantly impact the political arena, claiming to campaign on a platform against the European Union, migration, and vaccination.
Despite its far-right alignment and appeal to antisemitic and anti-Roma voters, the party is drawing attention from moderate voters, partly due to its stance on issues like corruption and rural representation. Political analysts speculate that while Toroczkai rejects coalitions, Our Homeland could still indirectly support a minority Fidesz government.
