Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of Taiwan's Kuomintang party, emphasizes the need for peace and reconciliation amid international tensions. Prior to her visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, Cheng stresses the importance of avoiding military conflict over Taiwan and seeks improved cross-strait relations.
Cheng Li-wun, the chairwoman of Taiwan's largest opposition party, has called for peace amid global instability, asserting that the world can ill afford another crisis regarding Taiwan. Ahead of her six-day trip to China, she emphasized reconciliation as her primary goal.
China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has been intensifying military and political pressure on the island. Taiwan's leaders maintain that their future should be decided by the Taiwanese people. Cheng underlined that Taiwan should not become a major global flashpoint amidst already existing turmoil.
Her visit to China comes against the backdrop of a delayed $40 billion defense budget proposal from Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te, blocked by the KMT. Zhang Han from China's Taiwan Affairs Office confirmed the visit, underscoring a commitment to peace and highlighting Beijing's push for reunification.
