Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jay Prakash Majumdar leveled serious allegations against All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday, accusing him of being financially backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Majumdar characterized Owaisi as a 'collection master' following the announcement of Owaisi's alliance with Humayun Kabir's Aam Janata Unnayan Party for the forthcoming West Bengal assembly elections.
Majumdar, speaking to reporters, contended that Owaisi lacks political sway outside of Hyderabad, asserting, 'Asaduddin Owaisi will get money from the BJP, just as he did in the previous assembly elections. I won't disclose how much he received, but having previously been with the BJP, I have insight.' He insinuated similar financial dealings for the AIMIM's involvement in the upcoming elections.
Meanwhile, Owaisi, responding to these claims, indicated plans to hold a press conference in Kolkata alongside Humayun Kabir on March 25. The duo's alliance will see Aam Janata Unnayan Party contest 182 seats in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, with AIMIM competing in approximately eight of those seats. The elections are set for April 23 and April 29, 2026, with results on May 4.
