Priyanka Gandhi, a prominent Congress MP, voiced her dismay on Wednesday at the resignation of Pradyut Bordoloi, a senior party leader from Assam. Bordoloi's departure, linked to discontent over ticket distribution for the Assam Assembly polls, is viewed as a significant setback for the party.
Bordoloi accused Congress leadership of neglect and discrimination, prompting his decision to end a lifelong political association. His stepson's candidacy, Prateek Bordoloi, in Margherita, further complicated the situation. Priyanka Gandhi conveyed her wish for dialogue before such drastic action.
This development follows the exit of former Assam Congress chairman Bhupen Kumar Borah to the BJP. Assam's 126 constituencies will vote on April 9 in a tightly contested election, with the BJP seeking another term while Congress aims for power restoration. The Election Commission also announced elections across multiple Indian states starting April 9.
