Denis Sassou N'Guesso has been re-elected for a fifth consecutive term as President of the Republic of Congo. Provisional results announced on Tuesday reveal he secured a staggering 94.82% of the vote. Interior Minister Raymond Zephirin Mboulou shared the results via state television, underscoring Sassou N'Guesso's long-standing grip on power.
The election, featuring six other candidates challenging the 82-year-old leader, was marked by an internet blackout and restricted traffic in the capital. Sassou N'Guesso first ascended to leadership in 1979, later returning after a civil war in 1997. Despite criticism and boycotts from opposition parties over alleged unfair practices, the President was the only contender extensively campaigning nationwide.
Amidst concerns of economic turmoil, with international debt over 94% of GDP and rising youth unemployment, Sassou N'Guesso's tenure continues as part of a broader African trend of aging leaders retaining power. The Republic of Congo faces a daunting future under his extended leadership, confronting poverty and demographic challenges that demand urgent attention.
