Thailand is gearing up for a significant shift in its political landscape as the new parliament is set to open on March 14. This marks a new chapter following the recent elections, according to an announcement in the Royal Gazette.
The general election was a victory for Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's Bhumjaithai Party, which won a commanding 191 of 500 seats. Trailing behind were the People's Party with 120 seats and Pheu Thai with 74. On March 15, the freshly convened parliament will hold its first meeting to elect a speaker and deputy speaker.
Bhumjaithai plans to form a coalition with Pheu Thai and several smaller parties, creating an alliance of 290 seats. The parliament will vote on a candidate for prime minister on March 19, with the new government expected to commence duties in April.
