In a recent session of the Odisha Assembly, Speaker Surama Padhy called on the state government to provide detailed information about a farmer's death in Kendrapara. The farmer's demise, linked to alleged harassment amid the paddy procurement season, has sparked concern among legislators.
Opposition Chief Whip Pramila Mallik raised the issue, narrating how the farmer, Trilochan Nayak, suffered chest pain after a stressful visit to a rice mill. Despite receiving a token for selling his paddy, Nayak endured a three-day wait and ultimately received less than the minimum support price, a situation alleged to have contributed to his death.
The tragic incident has ignited calls for accountability, with several BJD members expressing grief and attributing it to mismanagement at state-run mandis. The Speaker's intervention mandates a detailed government response on this pressing issue before the current session concludes.
