Balendra Shah's newly established Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is poised for a commanding victory in Nepal's recent general elections. This significant development is disrupting the longstanding control of traditional political parties in a fragile political landscape.
The Election Commission's data reveals the RSP leading in 27 seats, including a clean sweep in all 10 constituencies of the Kathmandu district. In a surprising challenge to veteran politician and former prime minister K P Sharma Oli, Shah has garnered 39,284 votes in the Jhapa-5 constituency, compared to Oli's 10,293 votes.
Shah, an engineer popularly known as 'Balen', emerged as a symbol of change, embodying the public's desire for new leadership amid dissatisfaction with established parties. As Shah's RSP ascends, the election's outcome is closely watched by neighboring India, which hopes for stability to foster bilateral development partnerships.
