Amid Democracy Day celebrations in Kathmandu, Nepal's interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki cautioned that ignoring youth discontent could spark another rebellion. Addressing the Nepali Army Pavilion, she stressed that democracy needs to deliver outcomes, protect citizens' rights, and foster accountability.
Karki referred to the Gen Z-led protests last year, which led to the ouster of the K P Sharma Oli-led government, emphasizing that the protests sought to end corruption, nepotism, and discrimination, and called for good governance and equitable justice.
In conjunction, President Ramchandra Paudel expressed hopes for Democracy Day to achieve sustainable peace and prosperity, while former King Gyanendra hinted at potential monarchy restoration in light of purported national crises, ahead of the upcoming elections.
