In a sharp rebuke, the BJD has accused the BJP government in Odisha of neglecting its 2014 election pledge to secure special category status for the state, a move crucial for enhancing development and disaster management capabilities.
During a recent press conference, BJD MP Sasmit Patra highlighted that the Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary had indicated earlier this year that the Centre lacks any current proposal to grant Odisha the special status.
The BJD challenged Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to gain cabinet endorsement to advance the issue. The interest in special status dates back to 1979 and has seen significant public support, including a massive one-crore signature campaign delivered to the President.
