John Steenhuisen Steps Down: A Shift in South Africa's Political Landscape

In a surprising political move, John Steenhuisen announced he will not be seeking re-election as leader of South Africa’s Democratic Alliance in April. This announcement was made at a press conference on Wednesday.

Having held the leadership position since 2019, Steenhuisen has been a prominent figure within the party. Currently serving as the country's agriculture minister under President Cyril Ramaphosa's administration, his departure from the party leadership marks a significant shift in focus.

Steenhuisen affirmed his dedication to confront South Africa's worst foot and mouth disease outbreak, signaling a concentrated effort in his ministerial role. “For the rest of this term of office, I will focus all of my time and energy on defeating the most devastating foot and mouth disease outbreak our country has ever seen,” he stated.
