Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the most prominent son of Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi, has died, sources close to his family, including his lawyer Khaled el-Zaydi, as well as Libyan media, revealed on Tuesday. He reportedly succumbed to gunshot wounds, sparking a probe into his untimely death.
On Wednesday, Libya's attorney general's office announced that investigators and forensic doctors examined Gaddafi's body. They confirmed he died from gunshot wounds and are now working to identify suspects responsible for the act. They are committed to taking necessary steps towards initiating a criminal case.
Saif al-Islam, once influential in Libyan politics, saw his public presence diminish after receiving a death sentence in absentia in 2015 for suppressing protests during the 2011 revolution. Despite these setbacks and facing charges from the International Criminal Court, he aimed to contest Libya's presidential election in 2021, which was ultimately canceled.
