In preparation for the forthcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has assigned symbols to the political parties led by veteran actors Vijay and Kamal Haasan. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has been awarded the whistle symbol, while Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) will contend under the battery torch symbol.

Haasan's MNM has formed an alliance with the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Meanwhile, Vijay's TVK is set to make its electoral debut, challenging the current DMK government in the upcoming polls. The ECI has accepted the application for a common symbol allocation under the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.

The allocation process, as outlined in the 1968 order, allows candidates to acquire symbols as 'free symbols' if their parties do not contest in certain constituencies. However, failure to secure victories in at least 5 percent of the total assembly seats could result in parties losing their symbols. Political parties, including AIADMK, are intensifying their readiness, with AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami unveiling initial election promises.
