In a striking statement, Congress leader Harish Rawat has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to undermine the legacy of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for political benefit. Speaking with PTI Videos, Rawat underscored the distinct contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Indira Gandhi to the nation's history.
Harish Rawat highlighted Patel's vital role in unifying states and establishing the constitutional framework alongside Nehru. Under Indira Gandhi's leadership, India witnessed pivotal changes, including the Green, White, and Blue Revolutions signifying moves towards self-reliance. Rawat praised her steadfastness during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, a stance that bolstered national pride when she stood up to President Nixon.
Reflecting on her assassination, Rawat paid homage to India's first female prime minister, commemorating her as a leader who symbolized resilience and protection for the exploited. Her tragic death in 1984 triggered significant unrest and anti-Sikh riots. Rawat contends that any attempt to downplay her sacrifices only detracts from the greatness of all involved historical figures.
