The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has leveled strong accusations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission following two tragic incidents in West Bengal. A 63-year-old man from Cooch Behar, reportedly overwhelmed by anxiety over alleged errors in the electoral rolls, attempted suicide. This incident closely follows another suicide, linking both to the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls currently underway in the state.
Senior police officials have confirmed that Khairul Sheikh, the man involved, had been anxious about an error in his 2002 voter list entry, which allegedly led to his desperate act. He is currently receiving medical treatment. Meanwhile, TMC leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee, have condemned the BJP's approach, blaming their political tactics for these recent tragedies.
The BJP, however, has dismissed TMC's allegations, describing the SIR process as a regular exercise. As investigations continue, the incidents have sparked fresh political disputes, with the Commission yet to comment on the matter. Police are working to determine if a direct link exists between these events and the ongoing voter list revision process.
