The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has questioned the recent assignment of IPS officer HK Lal as the Inspector General of Police for the Southwestern Range in Koraput. This jurisdiction notably includes the Nuapada assembly segment, where a bypoll is set for November 11.
In their petition to Odisha Chief Electoral Officer RS Gopalan, the BJD called for the cancellation of Lal's appointment, arguing that it was made during a period when the model code of conduct is applicable. The party stressed the need for impartial officers in key positions to ensure a free and fair by-election in the Nuapada constituency.
The BJD further alleged that Lal's appointment could be politically motivated, noting previous concerns over his neutrality. Additionally, they accused ruling BJP leaders of exploiting administrative resources to favor their party during the by-election process.
