China has announced the establishment of a new holiday, the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration, further asserting its territorial claims over Taiwan. The National People's Congress has designated October 25 to commemorate the anniversary of Taiwan's handover from Japanese control in 1945.
Shen Chunyao, director of the NPC Standing Committee's Legislative Affairs Commission, stated that establishing the holiday underscores the historical view that Taiwan is a part of China. This move aligns with Beijing's longstanding position against Taiwan independence.
The announcement comes amid increased military activity around Taiwan, highlighting China's efforts to assert control in the region. Beijing's declaration of the new holiday is another sign of the escalating pressure on Taiwan, sparking further debate on cross-strait relations.
