The inaugural session of the autumn assembly in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed intense debates between the ruling National Conference and the opposition BJP around the legacy of former governor Satya Pal Malik. Central to the dispute was Malik's controversial role in the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

While Bashir Veeri of the National Conference criticized Malik's tenure as controversial, BJP's Sham Lal Sharma demanded such remarks be removed from the proceedings. Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather urged respect for the deceased, without granting Sharma's expunge request. Meanwhile, Congress leader G A Mir painted Malik as outspoken and dedicated, highlighting the struggles he faced.

The session also addressed other political matters such as AAP MLA Mehraj Malik's recent arrest. CPI(M)'s M Y Tarigami emphasized learning from the deceased's tenure through respectful criticism. This assembly illustrated the complex legacy of Malik, who served as governor in five states, leaving a varied impression across political lines.
