In a brewing controversy, Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has defended a police FIR against three unidentified women for offering namaz at Shaniwar Wada, a protected monument in Pune. The incident led to protests from BJP MP Medha Kulkarni and other right-wing groups.
An FIR was filed under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Rules, 1959, after a viral video showed the women offering prayers at the historic site. This provoked demonstrations and purification rituals from BJP leaders and right-wing outfits on Sunday.
Amid heightened security, Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC emphasized that the action was not a communal issue but a matter of respecting ASI regulations. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane questioned if Muslims would allow Hindus to chant at Haji Ali. Opposition leaders accused the BJP of communalism, calling it a distraction from government scandals.
