Yogendra Makwana, an influential Congress leader and former Union minister, passed away at the age of 92 in Ahmedabad, reportedly due to age-related factors, a party spokesperson confirmed. His tenure in the Rajya Sabha from 1973 to 1989 marked a significant era in Indian politics.
Makwana's political journey began in Sojitra village of Gujarat as the general secretary of the Kheda District Praja Samajwadi Party. He later joined the Congress under the guidance of Indira Gandhi, serving in the cabinets of both Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, managing key portfolios from Home Affairs to Agriculture.
In 2006, he took the helm of the Scheduled Caste Department of the AICC, driving forward pivotal welfare schemes for marginalized communities. His legacy is characterized by his unwavering dedication to the upliftment of Scheduled Castes, leaving an indelible impact on Indian society.
