In a shocking turn of events, a self-proclaimed godman, Maheshgiri, also known as Mahesh Kakde, has been taken into custody by police in Maharashtra's Nashik district. The arrest follows serious allegations of sexual exploitation brought against him by a 28-year-old woman.
The victim, beset by familial issues, was taken by her parents to the Shri Datta Devsthan Mutt in Dharangaon village hoping to find relief. Maheshgiri allegedly manipulated her into believing in his divine powers, claiming he could rid her of evil influences through rituals. These interactions later escalated to obscene texts and eventual sexual assault at a lodge.
The situation came to light when activists from the Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti, an organization combating superstition, supported the victim in filing a complaint. Consequently, the police registered a case of rape and invoked the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013, leading to Maheshgiri's immediate arrest.
