The U.S. government has taken decisive action against a major scam operation linked to Cambodian senator Kok An. On Thursday, sanctions were imposed on Kok An and 28 entities involved in crypto-romance scams that have allegedly swindled millions from American citizens.
The U.S. Treasury Department revealed that Kok An leveraged his political ties to shield networks orchestrating scams via promises of friendship or romance, consequently defrauding individuals of their digital assets. Multiple companies owned by Kok An, including Crown Resorts, were identified as central to these fraudulent activities.
The crackdown saw the establishment of an interagency Scam Center Strike Force, which is pressing charges against two Chinese nationals connected to these operations. With concerns reaching the level of national security threats, the U.S. government is collaborating with various law enforcement agencies to dismantle these networks and safeguard vulnerable Americans.
