Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla has called for a fundamental shift in the purpose of education, urging students to view it not merely as a pathway to employment but as a powerful tool for social responsibility, inclusivity, and nation-building.

Addressing the Annual Day ceremony of Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, Birla emphasized that true education must shape character, instill values, and inspire active participation in democracy. He noted that progress becomes meaningful only when development reaches the most marginalised sections of society.

"Education must not be confined to securing jobs. It should empower individuals to contribute to society, uphold values, and strengthen democratic participation," he said.

NEP 2020 Driving Transformational Change

Highlighting India's evolving education landscape, Birla pointed to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 as a catalyst for transformation. He said the policy promotes critical thinking, flexibility, and holistic learning—preparing students for a dynamic and complex world.

However, he stressed that knowledge and skills alone are insufficient without strong moral foundations. "Integrity, perseverance and ethical values are essential for meaningful and lasting success," he added.

Birla also underscored the central role of teachers, describing them as "architects of society" who not only impart knowledge but also nurture responsible, aware, and nation-oriented citizens.

Inclusive Education Takes Centre Stage

Commending Kirori Mal College, the Lok Sabha Speaker lauded its efforts to empower visually impaired students through technology and skill development. He said such initiatives reflect a deep commitment to inclusivity and equitable access to education.

He emphasized that embedding principles of social justice and equality within educational institutions is essential for building a balanced and inclusive society.

Youth Key to 'Viksit Bharat 2047' Vision

In a separate address at Maharaja Agrasen College, Birla urged students to align their ambitions with India's long-term developmental goals, particularly the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

He stressed that the realization of this vision depends on the innovation, dedication and active participation of the youth in governance and national development.

"India's youth are confident, ambitious and globally competitive. They are already leading in innovation, research and entrepreneurship. This is a defining moment where their contributions can shape India's future as a global power," he said.

Birla encouraged students to dream big, maintain discipline, and work with determination, while also taking responsibility for strengthening democratic institutions.

Call for Greater Youth Participation in Governance

Highlighting the importance of civic engagement, Birla noted that increased youth participation in policymaking and governance would lead to more responsive and future-ready leadership.

He also praised Maharaja Agrasen College as a hub of modern education, fostering innovation and intellectual growth. Drawing inspiration from historical figures, he referenced Maharaja Agrasen's principles of equality and collective prosperity, as well as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's role in shaping India's constitutional and administrative framework.

"Understanding the lives and values of great leaders strengthens character and deepens the spirit of nation-building," he said.

Innovation and Character at the Core of Education

At another event at Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, Birla reiterated the importance of innovation, original thinking, and technology in education. He highlighted that in a rapidly changing global environment, students must be equipped not only with knowledge but also with the ability to think creatively and adapt.

He described Viksit Bharat 2047 as more than a policy framework—calling it a collective national mission to build a developed, inclusive and self-reliant India by the centenary of independence.

Students were also recognised for their achievements, with Birla applauding their discipline, dedication and commitment.

A Broader Vision for India's Future

Across his engagements, Birla's message remained consistent: education must evolve into a holistic force that combines knowledge, values, innovation and social responsibility.

As India positions itself for long-term growth and global leadership, empowering its youth through inclusive, value-driven education will be key to achieving sustainable development and strengthening democratic foundations.
