Jain Community’s Economic and Philanthropic Legacy Spotlighted at National Seminar in Indore

The National Commission for Minorities (NCM), in collaboration with Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV), convened a high-level national seminar highlighting the profound contributions of the Jain community to India's economy, education, and philanthropy—underscoring its enduring role in nation-building and inclusive development.

Held at The Marriott in Indore, the seminar titled "The Contribution of the Jain Community to the Indian Economy, Education, and Philanthropy" brought together leading policymakers, scholars, industrialists, and community leaders to examine the community's economic influence and ethical legacy.

Philanthropy and Enterprise at the Core of Jain Identity

Addressing the gathering via video message, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju, emphasised that philanthropy lies at the heart of Jain society. He highlighted the community's extensive network of hospitals, dharamshalas, gaushalas, and community kitchens that serve people across backgrounds with dignity.

Rijiju also pointed to the pivotal role of Jain entrepreneurs in driving India's economic growth through innovation, job creation, and sustained investment in education and healthcare. He noted that the community's contributions align closely with the government's vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, reinforcing inclusive and sustainable development goals.

He further underlined the relevance of Jain philosophical principles—Ahimsa (non-violence), Aparigraha (non-possession), and Anekantavada (pluralism)—as guiding values for modern governance, sustainability, and social harmony.

Government Reaffirms Commitment to Minority Empowerment

Shri George Kurian, Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Chief Guest at the seminar, elaborated on key government initiatives aimed at empowering minority communities, including the PM VIKAS scheme and the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram. These programmes, he noted, are designed to promote skill development, entrepreneurship, and educational advancement, thereby enhancing participation in India's economic growth.

He emphasised the government's focus on inclusive development, stating that strengthening livelihoods and expanding opportunities across communities remains central to policy priorities.

Jain Community's Role in Strengthening India's Social Fabric

Members of the National Commission for Minorities echoed these sentiments. Ms. S. Munawari Begum praised the Jain community's longstanding commitment to service and upliftment, noting its continued impact on strengthening India's social fabric.

Shri Berjis Desai highlighted the contemporary relevance of Jain values, particularly non-violence and pluralism, describing them as essential principles in an increasingly complex global environment.

In her address, Smt. Alka Upadhyaya, Secretary of NCM, reaffirmed the Commission's active role in safeguarding community interests. She cited ongoing engagement with the Government of Jharkhand regarding the sanctity of Sammed Shikharji Hill, one of Jainism's most sacred pilgrimage sites, as an example of this commitment.

Economic Contributions and Institutional Impact

The seminar featured in-depth discussions across two technical sessions, exploring both economic contributions and philosophical foundations.

The first session focused on the Jain community's role in shaping India's economic landscape through trade, entrepreneurship, and industry. Speakers highlighted how Jain-led enterprises have historically contributed to wealth creation, employment generation, and industrial development.

Equally significant are the community's contributions to education and philanthropy. Over decades, Jain institutions have established schools, colleges, hospitals, and charitable trusts that continue to serve millions across the country, reinforcing a culture of giving and social responsibility.

Prominent speakers included Dr. Jitendra Bhai Shah, Dr. Ashok Badjatiya, Shri Girish J. Shah, and Shri Rajneesh Jain, among others, who collectively underscored the community's integrated approach to economic success and social impact.

Jain Philosophy in Contemporary Discourse

The second technical session examined Jainism's contribution to India's knowledge systems, with a focus on its philosophical principles and their modern relevance.

Experts highlighted how core Jain tenets—Ahimsa, Anekantavada, and Aparigraha—offer valuable frameworks for addressing contemporary challenges such as environmental sustainability, ethical governance, and social cohesion.

The discussions also explored how these principles can inform global conversations on climate responsibility, conflict resolution, and inclusive dialogue.

A Continuing Role in Nation-Building

The seminar concluded with a valedictory session led by Dr Srivatsa Krishna, Secretary, Ministry of Minority Affairs, who reiterated the importance of recognising and strengthening the Jain community's contributions to India's development journey.

As India advances toward its long-term development goals, the event highlighted the enduring relevance of the Jain community's economic dynamism, educational initiatives, and philanthropic ethos.

The seminar not only celebrated historical contributions but also positioned the Jain community as a key stakeholder in shaping a more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient future for India.
