India is poised for a major transformation in its economic and employment landscape, with green jobs and green entrepreneurship emerging as the central drivers of future growth, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh announced on the occasion of Earth Day.

Addressing the valedictory session of the National Conference on "Environmental Sustainability in the 21st Century: Science, Society and Solutions" at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi, the Minister outlined a forward-looking vision in which sustainability and economic expansion go hand in hand.

"Green Jobs and Green Entrepreneurship are set to become the defining driver of the Green Economy of the future," Dr. Singh said, highlighting the vast employment potential across sectors such as renewable energy, electric mobility, green fuels, and the circular economy.

A New Engine for Employment and Growth

The Minister emphasised that India's transition to a low-carbon economy will not only address climate challenges but also create large-scale employment opportunities for millions of young people.

He pointed to rapidly expanding sectors including:

  • Solar manufacturing and renewable energy deployment

  • Battery production and energy storage systems

  • Electric vehicle ecosystems and retrofitting innovations

  • Grid modernisation and energy management

  • Biofuels and waste-to-energy solutions

"These emerging sectors will not only generate jobs but also accelerate India's shift towards sustainable and low-carbon growth," he said.

Green Hydrogen and Industrial Transformation

At the centre of India's green transition is the National Green Hydrogen Mission, backed by an investment of over ₹19,000 crore. The initiative aims to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries such as steel and cement—key pillars of India's industrial economy.

Dr. Singh noted that cutting-edge technologies are already enabling cleaner production processes, positioning India as a global leader in industrial decarbonisation.

Innovation at the Grassroots

Highlighting the pace of technological change, the Minister stressed the importance of continuous innovation. He cited grassroots-level breakthroughs in electric mobility, where conventional vehicles are being converted into electric ones—demonstrating how sustainability can be made both affordable and scalable.

Such innovations, he said, reflect India's unique ability to combine high-end research with practical, community-driven solutions.

Circular Economy Opens New Business Frontiers

The Minister also underscored the growing role of the circular economy in shaping future industries. From recycling waste to converting used cooking oil into biofuel, these models are creating new entrepreneurial opportunities while reducing environmental impact.

This shift toward resource efficiency is expected to redefine production and consumption patterns, making sustainability a core component of economic activity.

Exploring Untapped Energy Sources

Looking beyond conventional renewables, Dr. Singh pointed to ocean energy as an underexplored frontier with significant potential, particularly given India's extensive coastline. He noted that ocean-based energy could complement solar and wind power in diversifying the country's energy mix.

At the same time, India continues to expand its nuclear energy capacity, with long-term plans to strengthen energy security while maintaining low carbon emissions.

Private Sector Participation and Innovation Push

The government is also opening up strategic sectors such as space and nuclear energy to greater private participation—an important step toward boosting innovation and attracting investment.

In a major push for research and entrepreneurship, the Minister highlighted the ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund, designed to support startups and innovators in scaling their ideas through a collaborative funding model involving both public and private stakeholders.

India's Global Role in Climate Action

With a population of over 1.4 billion, India has a pivotal role in shaping global climate outcomes. Dr. Singh emphasised that the country is well-positioned to lead the global green transition, guided by the vision of Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He stressed that India's approach combines economic development with environmental responsibility—offering a model for other developing nations.

Youth at the Centre of the Green Future

Concluding his address, the Minister called on students, researchers, and young innovators to actively engage with emerging opportunities in sustainability.

"The future will be shaped by innovation, adaptability and informed choices driven by the youth," he said, urging them to take leadership in building a greener and more resilient economy.

As India accelerates its transition toward a sustainable future, green jobs and entrepreneurship are set to redefine not only the country's economic trajectory but also its role in global climate leadership.
