An immigration officer in Colorado faces third-degree assault and criminal mischief charges following an incident involving a protester. Prosecutors revealed that the officer allegedly placed Franci Stagi in a chokehold during a protest in Durango, Colorado.
The protest centered around the detention of three Colombian asylum-seekers and saw Stagi confronting the officer, who was relocating camping gear near an ICE facility. In multiple videos, the federal agent is seen grabbing Stagi by the hair and carrying her across the street.
US Customs and Border Protection has not yet commented on the charges. The Colorado Bureau of Investigations is conducting an independent investigation into the officer's actions at the request of local law enforcement, citing potential state law violations.
