Six individuals, accused of conspiring to overthrow Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, have been arraigned on charges of treason and terrorism. The accused, among them a retired major general and a police inspector, have pleaded not guilty to the 13 charges.
Authorities assert that the defendants conspired to 'levy war against the state,' an act that would overawe the presidency. Meanwhile, former Bayelsa state Governor Timipre Sylva, accused of aiding the plot by concealing it, remains at large.
This trial unfolds from an alleged coup attempt that was foiled in January, a move which, if successful, would have disrupted Nigeria's nearly three decades of democratic governance. The case has been adjourned until April 27 for bail considerations.
