In a major step toward strengthening India's leadership in global water governance, the Ministry of Jal Shakti has announced the 9th edition of India International Water Week (IIWW-2026), scheduled to be held from September 22 to 26, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The event will revolve around the theme "Climate Resilient Water Management", reflecting the urgent need to address water challenges in the face of climate change.

Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Shri C. R. Patil, formally launched IIWW-2026 at Shram Shakti Bhavan, unveiling the official brochure and activating the event's digital portal, signaling the beginning of what is expected to be one of the largest global gatherings in the water sector.

A Global Platform for Water Innovation and Policy Dialogue

Positioned as a flagship international conference, IIWW-2026 aims to bring together experts, policymakers, innovators, and stakeholders from across the world to exchange knowledge, showcase innovations, and develop collaborative strategies for sustainable water management.

The event is expected to witness participation from around 150 countries, with 11 nations likely to join as partner countries, highlighting its growing global significance. Domestically, all 84 Central Ministries/Departments and 36 States and Union Territories have been invited, with several expected to actively partner in the event.

Officials say the scale of participation reflects India's rising influence in shaping global water discourse, particularly in areas such as climate resilience, water security, and sustainable resource management.

Driving 'Viksit Bharat' Through Water Security

Addressing the media, Shri C. R. Patil emphasized that water conservation is central to India's development journey and a key pillar in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat. He highlighted Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's call to transform water conservation into a people's movement under the "Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari" initiative.

The Minister revealed that over 60 lakh water conservation and artificial recharge structures have already been created nationwide, with the ambitious target of one crore structures expected to be achieved by May 2026.

Further reinforcing this commitment, he noted that a substantial portion—ranging between 30% to 65% of expenditure under MGNREGS and related rural development schemes—has been earmarked specifically for water conservation efforts. This integration of policy and grassroots action is being seen as a model for large-scale environmental sustainability.

49 Sessions, Multiple Forums, and Inclusive Participation

The five-day conference will feature 49 high-level sessions across a wide spectrum of themes, designed to address both policy-level challenges and on-ground implementation.

Key highlights include:

  • Ministerial Plenary

  • Global Water Leaders' Plenary (GWLPLN)

  • Water Leaders' Forum (WLF)

  • Practitioners' Forum (PF)

  • Country Forum

  • Thematic Forum (TF)

  • Youth Forum (YF)

  • Start-up Forum

The Thematic Forum will delve into critical areas such as:

  • Inclusive and equitable water governance

  • Climate-related water risks

  • Technology-driven water security

  • Sustainable water resource management

  • Innovative financing for water infrastructure

  • Community participation and collaboration

Special sessions involving international organizations, NGOs, young professionals, school students, and grassroots success stories will ensure the event remains inclusive and multi-dimensional.

Focus on Innovation, Start-ups, and Industry Collaboration

A major attraction of IIWW-2026 will be the state-of-the-art exhibition at Bharat Mandapam, spread across Hall No. 14GF over four days. The exhibition is expected to serve as a hub for:

  • Showcasing cutting-edge water technologies

  • Facilitating business partnerships

  • Connecting innovators with investors and policymakers

The inclusion of a Start-up Forum reflects the Ministry's focus on encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship in the water sector, particularly in areas like smart irrigation, wastewater management, desalination, and digital water monitoring.

Integration with Global WASH Agenda

Running parallel to the main event, the Second International WASH Conference-2026 (September 22–24) will bring together global experts to address pressing challenges in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH). The integration of WASH discussions within IIWW highlights the government's commitment to holistic water management, linking sanitation, health, and sustainability.

Field Visits and Real-World Exposure

The final day of the conference will include field visits, offering delegates an opportunity to witness India's water conservation initiatives and infrastructure projects on the ground — a move aimed at bridging theory with practice.

India's Growing Role in Global Water Leadership

Senior officials present at the launch, including Secretaries from key departments, the Chairman of the Central Water Commission, and the Director General of the National Water Development Agency, reiterated that IIWW-2026 will serve as a platform for shaping future global water policies.

With climate change intensifying water stress worldwide, India's approach—combining policy innovation, community participation, and technological advancement—is increasingly being viewed as a scalable model for other nations.

Registration Now Open

The Ministry has invited participation from governments, international organizations, industries, NGOs, and stakeholders across the water sector. The official website www.indiawaterweek.in is now live and open for delegate registration.

As preparations gather pace, IIWW-2026 is poised to become a landmark event, reinforcing India's commitment to sustainable water management and its vision of a climate-resilient future.
