India Calls for UN Reforms as Michelle Bachelet Campaigns for Top Role
India raised concerns about UN Security Council reform and development goals for the Global South during an interactive session with Michelle Bachelet, a candidate for UN Secretary-General. Bachelet emphasized the need for structural reforms and prioritizing the needs of Least Developed Countries and the Global South, promising effective leadership.
India has underscored the necessity for reform within the UN Security Council, raising pressing issues of developmental goals for the Global South in a dialogue with Michelle Bachelet, candidate for the UN Secretary-General position.
Bachelet, a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, is among four candidates vying for the top diplomatic role as current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres prepares to step down at the end of his tenure on December 31.
During the session, India emphasized the importance of inclusive representation and structural reforms to address the needs of Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States. Bachelet's candidacy, if successful, could mark a historic turning point, making her the first female leader in the UN's 80-year history.
