Two Israeli soldiers have been relieved of combat duty following a troubling incident involving the destruction of a religious sculpture in southern Lebanon, the military revealed on Tuesday. The soldiers were placed in detention after a photograph showed one of them using the blunt side of an axe on a fallen crucifix.
The image, which captured immediate criticism from politicians and religious leaders worldwide, was initially shared by Younis Tirawi, a Palestinian journalist known for documenting reported misconduct by Israeli forces. The military's statement further clarified that, out of the eight soldiers present, two were actively involved—the one damaging the statue and another capturing the act in photographs.
In response, Israel's Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, expressed strong condemnation of the deed, terming it a serious moral lapse. This incident has raised concerns over escalating sectarian discord in the region, as tensions continue between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, despite a recently brokered ceasefire agreement facilitated by the United States.
