Chad Mobilizes Troops to Combat Gang Violence in Haiti
Chad will send 1,500 troops to Haiti to assist the UN's efforts to curb gang violence. Chad's President Mahamat Deby Itno announced the deployment following a UN request. This initiative follows last year's expansion of the Kenya-led multinational force in Haiti, tasked with tackling gang control.
Chad is set to deploy 1,500 troops to Haiti as part of the United Nations' mission to combat gang violence in the Caribbean nation, according to President Mahamat Deby Itno's announcement to the legislature.
The deployment involves two battalions of 750 soldiers each, starting this month, and will last for one year. A contingent of 400 soldiers has already arrived in Haiti, marking Chad's contribution to the mission.
This initiative follows the UN Security Council's decision last year to expand the Kenya-led multinational force in Haiti to 5,500 troops, which is now authorized to arrest suspected gang members. Currently, gangs control a significant portion of Haiti's capital and central regions, exacerbating instability in the country.
