In a recent escalation of tensions, India summoned Iranian envoy Mohammad Fathali after an incident involving gunfire by Iran's Revolutionary Guards forced two Indian vessels to reverse course in the Strait of Hormuz. Authoritative sources confirmed the diplomatic protest, although official statements from the Ministry of External Affairs have yet to be released.
The incident occurred as several commercial vessels attempted to cross the strategic waterway, reopened and then closed again by Iran, citing US violations of international agreements. A vessel tracker noted the presence of an Indian-flagged supertanker, reportedly carrying 2 million barrels of Iraqi oil, amidst the unfolding situation.
India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, emphasized the nation's unwavering commitment to ensuring safe and unimpeded maritime transit. Participating in a virtual 'AZEC Plus' meeting with Japan, Jaishankar labeled attacks on merchant shipping as unacceptable, highlighting India's concerns over disruptions in the energy markets.
