A Fragile Peace: Trump's Ceasefire Between Israel and Lebanon
President Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, marking a halt in conflicts involving Hezbollah and the possibility of diplomatic progress. Despite the agreement, skepticism remains about its durability, with Lebanese and Israeli leaders poised for further dialogue amid ongoing tensions.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire starting at 5 p.m. EST. This pause in hostilities aims to ease Israel’s conflict with the Iran-backed group Hezbollah, as war with Iran continues to disrupt global energy markets and impacts economies worldwide.
Despite agreeing to the ceasefire, uncertainties linger about its efficacy. A truce remains in question as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu maintains demands, including the dismantling of Hezbollah. Hezbollah, in response, claims the right to resist due to the presence of Israeli troops in southern Lebanon.
As the ceasefire takes effect, challenges remain. Fighting has displaced over a million residents in Lebanon, and the conflict still looms at strategic points like the town of Bint Jbeil. Meanwhile, diplomatic channels reopen, with potential talks on the horizon involving Lebanese and Israeli leaders toward achieving lasting peace.
